Spring Art Walk

We are thrilled to announce the art walk has been rescheduled to

Sunday May 15, 12 – 4 pm!

Join us in celebrating the completion of this 2021 summer project! Thank you Activate YYC for the grant to make this possible.

Goals for the project:

  • Make unique, beautiful places that people would want to seek out in our neighborhood regardless of the season
  • Build stronger connections among our Brentwood residents by engaging them in the walkway mural project and,
  • Encourage more walking in Brentwood by having a map.

We installed murals along several walkways in Brentwood and the project inspired Brentwood’s first garage door mural!

Check out this map that shows all the murals and walkways!

Meet the artists behind the paintings (they will have a table at the Community Association to showcase or sell their artwork) and grab a bite to eat.

Artists in attendance:

A big thank you to Swinton’s Art Supplies, Calgary North Decorating and Rona for supporting us with amazing deals on all the materials. Thank you to COOP for providing treats for the event. Thank you to the residents who are hosting these amazing murals on their fences.

Drivers Needed – You Can Help Address Food Insecurity In Calgary and Brentwood

The past two months as Covid has started to surge again and food prices rise and inflation at a rate not seen for 30 years, food insecurity has surged in Calgary, Brentwood and across Canada. You can help address this need in many ways.

Drivers NeededFood Hamper Delivery Mornings Tuesday to Thursday.

The past two months we’ve struggled to get drivers, at time we’ve had almost half the regular pool out (Thank you so much to our pool drivers, you’ve made a tremendous difference), an almost equal distribution between Covid isolation/Covid delayed surgery/Travel. If we could have 5-6 more drivers in the pool, that would be a tremendous help.

Little Food Library – Demand Grows – Your Continued Help is SO Appreciated!

In early December, our community came together to gather food for the Little Food Library. So many wonderful donations helped sustain our Pantry over the holidays – which were the coldest days of winter (so far!) On a positive note, the sustained cold weather allowed us to include frozen foods in the pantry, which were well appreciated by our neighbours. With winter here, bills due, prices up and Omicron impacting us all, individuals and families who are already living on low incomes are feeling the pressure. Demand at the Little Food Library is climbing.

Can you help us refill the pantry with winter stable foods like nuts, rice/pasta, cereal, crackers, soup packages and dried fruit?  Canned meats, fruits, vegetables, and other essentials are also needed and can be left on the doorstep of 3624 Boulton Rd on colder days. They will be put out on warmer days. Since last year we’re helping out a young family with a baby? Donations of baby foods are extra helpful, perhaps a small ($20-25.00) Walmart/Coop gift card? If you would like to donate cash or a gift cards– please use the mailbox and ring the bell or text 405.606.6949 so it gets picked up.

Volunteers Needed Calgary Food Bank

Volunteer opportunities exist at the Main Food Bank and various satellite locations in the NW and across Calgary.  Calgary Food Bank Volunteer page is here, details on volunteering and this week’s needs are here. If you have 2-3 hours available weekly – the Calgary Food Bank could use you. They also have ad hoc shifts for occasional volunteers. Food Bank Volunteering page is here.

Donating to The Calgary Food Bank – The Food Bank leverages at 1:5, $10 donated, buys $50 in food. With Alberta’s generous tax credits after $200 in total donations you get 50% back on charitable donations, so leverage is doubled. Donate to the Calgary Food Bank here.

Brentwood Snow Art – Make Winter Magical (on your Car or Lawn)

Have a winter awe walk  Frequent CBC Health expert Jenn Moss spoke earlier this year about awe walks, a walk where you intentionally shift your attention outward instead of inward. Catch a mother and child playing, a couple holding hands, kids being silly, a beautiful bird at a feeder or a gorgeous mural on a fence or garage door. Take advantage of the Brentwood is Beautiful map to plan your awe walks.

Winter solstice and Christmas are coming, days will soon be starting to get longer. Thanks so much to all the help people have given in 2021. If you need help this winter, please reach out.  All the best for Christmas, the holidays and 2022, Bonita McCurryPresident Brentwood Community Association
